My Daily Wine Reduction / recipe starter

  • ~4oz wine (red or white – not sweet)
  • Garlic, crushed
  • ~1Tbsp Butter or bacon fat
  • any herbs or spices

Warm the wine over a low flame, add garlic and stir occasionally until fragrant. Add desired fat, and desired herbs or spices to meet your preferences.

Keep warm for a minute, then begin recipe like usual; sauteeing onions, browning meat, etcetera.

I use this base to try new things and experiment. Take notes! Try light wines with dark meats and savory herbs, try dark wines with light meats and just butter – the sky is the limit. Have fun!

Episode 20: Ready to Zoom & Cooking Wine

Welcome back everybody! Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, home stuff, my low maintenance beauty and fashion, and travel when possible. I’m happy that you’re here with me.
Today I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, follow on with a blog update, then wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
I’m putting on my (invisible) Key Spouse hat and hosting a virtual happy hour this weekend for my spouses and I’m excited for it! Time-wise it’s only one hour duration in the afternoon, and Kid Jupiter should be napping so I will really be free to have a beer and chat.
During the casual video chat I’m going to try my hand at a little Japanese “golden joinery.” I’m probably mispronouncing kintsugi, but it’s spelled k-i-n-t-s-u-g-i and it’s the art of mending broken pottery with precious-metal dusted resin. So I’ll be trying to repair a white IKEA pie plate with my epoxy, gold pigment, and beers…while on camera. What could go wrong?

For today’s LadyJupiter.com blog talk…
I added a new Picks of the Week post; week number 33 has a never-ending pandemic slash lockdown theme. Luckily the Jupiter House has only been taking preemptive precautions, and our health hasn’t been a question, but we still avoid crowds, restaurants, travel, etcetera. So this post hits a few relevant favorites like
sunscreen
my favorite masks
red light therapy
• grocery subscriptions ($15 off of Butcher Box)
• and a brief nod to the utility of drive-thru liquor stores.
Link in the show notes! Oh, and I also added a few new photos to Outfits of the Day Summer 2020 – but I just haven’t felt as compelled to write this week. What’s happening right now is that I look at my long list of partially written blog posts, I experience a little dread, so then I spend an hour looking at designer scarves until it’s time to either wake up the boy, or start cooking dinner – whichever happens first.

And now for my most recent domestic diversion
I just wanted to share my new favorite way to start a lot of meals. I warm up about 4oz of wine with crushed garlic, bring to a simmer, add butter or bacon fat, then start my recipe. It maybe takes ten minutes at the most and elevates almost anything. If I’m cooking any beef, chicken, or pork in my Instant Pot (a 6qt Duo) – I definitely start with this base. Earlier tonight I used a buttery chardonnay, garlic, and bacon fat to cook down a bundle of kale and collard greens. It was delicious!
For the record, I do mix things up and use what’s handy. I often use garlic because it’s available (and delicious), but I will use herbs (fresh or dried) or just reduce the wine with butter – I do not stress about certain wine, fat, herb, and protein combinations. Life is too short to worry about those things. My kitchen confidence is a blend of flavor memories, and knowledge that I can always just order a pizza if I’ve made a grave mistake.

And that’s it for today’s show!
